The Presidents' Pen

Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498)

How nice to have Co-President Penny back hosting the ZOOM meeting and pleased to hear her Mum is home again.

Finding a date for your next Apirana clean up not interfering with an All Black loss may be a bit of a challenge Peter B - thanks for organising.

The Sergeants session definitely revealed some flaws in all our 'memory banks' particularly when it came to America's Cup!

Just as well we engaged the brain for On Beam Consulting Robert Wheadon's IT presentation.  What wonderful resources we have within our membership. Robert's presentation was clear and to the point. Even managed to answer the questions from the not so technical members.  Robert is happy to help all - The link for his contacts

Good News! We have a Christmas dinner planned at Remuera Golf Club, 6pm Dec 11th. RSVP asap please to Robyn

Take care

Stories
Meeting in Review - Nov 25th 2021
21 Members plus, Robert our guest speaker, zoomed in for our penultimate Thursday meeting for the year.

Prior to Robert taking centre stage a few Club Notices were shared;
  • Directors Reports;
Club Services Director, PP Robyn,  confirmed  that this week's speaker is Sarah Blyde from Rocket Lab.  It will be a Zoom Dinner Meeting commencing 7.00pm - see next story.

Robyn also confirmed that a year-end Christmas event /dinner, will be held at the Remuera Golf Club on Saturday 11 Dec.  See separate story below.

PP Hugh confirmed that the Food Bank Collection will take place at New World Lunn Ave on Saturday December 11th - Roster seeking volunteers will be circulated shortly.

Director Peter B. thanked all for their participation in last weeks Working Bee and advised that there will be another WB before Xmas - watch this space.

Co-President Penny will be looking for expressions of interest before the end of the year from those thinking about attending the District Conference in Wellington next year.  Please watch out for the communication from Penny soon.

Our guest speaker was Robert Wheadon, partner of Club Member Ruth.  The title of his talk was, "IT Helpful Technical Tips".  Robert is a Programmer by trade, he has always worked a lot with computers, and earlier this year he decided to capitalize on his many years of experience and go out on his own.  His new business is "On Beam Consultancy".  Essentially anything to do with computers is his business.

Starting with those pestering upgrades, Robert broke his talk down into five key sub headings;
  • Upgrades
  • Back-ups
  • Keep your passwords safe
  • Staying out of trouble online
  • When it (the computer) stops!
We all face these IT challenges every day and the snippets of knowledge from Robert on how to deal with these problems as they arise were of interest to all.  If you would like further information, or help, do not hesitate to contact Robert who can negotiate a consultant fee with you from one hour's support through to supplying an ongoing support contract.  On Beams contacts are shown below.

Many thanks for your time Robert - very much appreciated by all.
Club Meetings and Other Important Dates
THURSDAY DECEMBER 2nd - DINNER ZOOM MEETING - 7.00pm - Guest Speaker - Sarah Blyde:
Sarah is a project engineer at Rocket Lab, a space company that builds and launches the Electron rocket in New Zealand.  Sarah grew up in Auckland and went on to study engineering at the University of Auckland before moving to Western Australia to work as a petroleum engineer.  While there, she became fascinated by the growing space industry and decided she wanted to be part of all the action so went to France to do a masters degree in space studies.

The pandemic kicked off halfway through and she came home to New Zealand to finish her studies remotely before ending up with her dream job at Rocket Lab!  Space isn't her only passion though - you'll often find Sarah out training for her next marathon, on the water kiteboarding, or hiking up a mountain somewhere.
