Rotary brings some unexpected privileges - like spending the past weekend on Hauturu - Little Barrier Island with my son Fraser. This only became possible through joining the Hauturu Supporters Group via Honorary Member David Stone - and thus seeing Aotearoa as it used to be (no vertebrate pests incl. kiore). As a working weekend, of course we had to justify our time there - by helping feed baby tuatara! The fine weather and smooth seas added to the comfort.
Today, Mon. 4th is the first day for Project Elf's Gift Wrapping at Sylvia Park. Please add your name to the Roster if not already, for any time over the next 20 days during shopping hours. The roster is a live document that can be accessed via this Bulletin (see below). Our collective thanks to Ainie and Robyn for organising this major fundraiser for the club.
This Thursday evening is our final club meeting for the year - with a Christmas theme, and with Ainie, Gary, and Miles sharing their experiences from their recent trip to southern India. Robyn and Brian are kindly organising the 'Christmasification' of the venue, and Penny, Toni, & committee will distribute the Christmas food gifts that we will bring for our community. Project Elf (Supervising the Gift Wrapping Booths at Sylvia Park) will have "lifted off" by the time you read this. This is a sought-after fundraiser which made $21K for last year's volunteers! Project Elf runs from Monday 4 December until 24 December. There is still time to volunteer and join fellow St John's Club-Elves for gift-wrapping supervision "shifts". The roster will remain "live" and can be added to until the last day of Project Elf . With great pleasure Noeline Doherty, Head of Accounting, Glendowie College introduced us to Year 12 student Frank Leng, this year's recipient of the Peter MacKenzie Scholarship Award. Frank has consistently achieved "Excellence" Endorsed in ALL subjects in NCEA across Levels 1,2 and 3. This year, not only did Frank come first in Economics and receive awards in ALL of his other subjects, he was also named Proxime Accessit (runner up to Dux) of Glendowie College.
Noeline advised us Frank was a hard-working, high-achiever academically, additionally he is an extremely talented musician and accomplished pianist. As a well organised student he even had time to squeeze golf into his timetable from Years 7 to 12! Frank is also an Interact member and volunteered as a tutor for the College's afterschool tutoring programme. Frank gave a massive thank you for receiving this award and acknowledged Peter McKenzie as a great man. Frank advised, with the Scholarship funds he plans on purchasing a laptop and texts in preparation of undertaking a conjoint Commerce and Science degree at Auckland University, majoring in accountancy.
Our congratulations Frank on your work ethic, well rounded participation and superb results. Our club membership is delighted that you are the 22nd recipient of this Scholarship. We look forward to hearing how you get on with your studies. Click Read More for update on other scholarship recipients.
The AGM ran quickly and smoothly, as is the habit of our club. As always, the highlight was the Past President’s Report, this year from Ainie Kwok. Ainie showed a powerpoint featuring great photographs of activities from her (2016/17) year and reminded the membership of how successful the past Rotary year had been for our club:
