President's Message
Last Thursday's meeting was busy and informative with Raewynne Jacobs presenting on the largest community trust in Australasia (Foundation North) that supports so many activities in our Auckland and Northland communities. And we also welcomed back our enthusiastic construction crew from Taveuni, Ainie, Penny, Aubrey, David, and Donald, and with great images and stories of their working week.

This Thursday evening, with a full house, it is our pleasure to host many of our fellow Rotarians who have taken on major responsibilities at International and District levels, and who are in Auckland to participate in the 2017 New Zealand and Pacific Zone 7B Symposium.  We will be addressed by Rotary Foundation Trustee Mike Webb from UK, and are also fortunate to have students from our partner schools - Glen Taylor and St Piux - to welcome our visitors.

Last Saturday evening, Robyn Ingram kindly hosted a fun evening of wine appreciation, to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation. The evening ran as a friendly competition between teams of imbibers, with a variable measure of abilities displayed.  My team's 'talent' was rewarded by a proud position of 4th .... out of 4 teams. But we all came away with new 'insights' amidst the amusement.

As our 2017/18 Rotary year is well underway, please make a note of our next Combined Committee meetings on Mon. 11 Sept. at the Golf Clubrooms, 6.30 pm, to plan for our current and future club activities.
Stories
Raewyn Jacob Funding Project Programme Manager - Foundation North
Raewyn keenly presented the scope and role of Foundation North which covers the communities of Auckland and Northland and the biggest philanthropic organisation in Australasia.  The Foundation was formed in 1988 and in 2015 rebranded from its former name ASB Community Trust. There are 15 Trustees with one of them our very own Toni Millar.  Funding is received from shares invested in a perpetual trust so income is generated from various investments. This allows Foundation North to make millions of dollars in grants each year for not for profit groups in Auckland and Northland.

Raewyn spoke of Foundation North’s current strategic plan review spanning the next 15 years to become a more strategic grant maker.  This means that Foundation North while continuing their traditional community support funding, will increasingly focus on working in partnership with grantees and other funders to achieve projects of greater scale and impact. The hope is this will facilitate improved outcomes for high needs communities across Auckland and Northland.

Team Taveuni Report Back Ainie, Audrey, David, Donald, Penny
Well didn’t they do well??  Penny lead the 'Team Tavenui' report back saying it was an amazing experience to spend a week on Tavenui Island doing something practical and important for the community.  Penny regaled us with a few facts:  Tavenui Island is the third largest Fijian island with a population of 9,00o people. It has incredibly poor infrastructure, which has no power supply (generator only) and no reticulated water system.  The Island is very vulnerable to natural disasters still evidenced in the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston in February 2016 where many of the dwellings remain as shanty buildings. Nevertheless, Penny said the people have a happy and simple life.
An incredible achievement by the Rotary Club of Tavenui is from July 2016 to June 2017 they funded $650,000 worth of projects ranging from painting teachers’ quarters to providing Taveuni Eye project, all supported by a very dedicated and productive team of local people.   In turn this also provided the opportunity for the locals to learn new skills on the job.  Penny said each two-bedroom house costs $47k and nothing is wasted so brown tiles are used in the bathrooms, kitchen benchtops, floors and walls and green paint is the only colour choice for housing painting.

Wine Tasting for a Great Cause
In support of the Mental Health Foundation, an "elite" group of club members enjoyed a wine tasting hosted at the Ingram Residence on Saturday evening. Superb wines were provided by Roger Garrett who divided us into four teams and coached us through a challenging game to see which team was best at identifying each wine's country of origin, grape variety, age and alcohol content.

The teams, aptly named:  Que Syrah Syrah; Wineskis, Wine Knot and Gewurty Old Men grew amazingly more confident as the evening progressed!  The Wineskis unexpectedly won the evening with a last minute run on the reds.

The funds Roger makes from these special wine tastings are part of his commitment to the Kilimanjaro Challenge 2017. Roger is one of 25 individuals registered for this 12 day adventure, culminating in a climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro.  Led by Ultramarathon Runner, Mal Law (who has partnered with the Mental Health Foundation) each individual registered is set a fundraising target of $4,000. Collectively (so far) the group have raised over $100,000 for the Mental Health Foundation. Departure date for the challenge is September 13.  We look forward to hearing back from Roger on how this epic adventure goes.
