President's Message
Last Friday it was my privilege to stand-in for Gary Key at the Volvo Yachting Excellence Awards at Westhaven's Royal NZ Yacht Squadron. Gary received a prestigious Service Award for his leading advocacy through our Club of the Yachting NZ's Volvo Sailing "Have a Go!" scheme, that will in 2018 engage students from 12 local low-decile schools. Gary's role was also acknowledged in the Club's Yachting Scholarship that annually assists two talented youth sailors to attend their class youth championships.

Please join in our Annual General Meeting this Thursday morning, when we have the chance to thank Ainie for her great year (2016/17) as President. The meeting will focus on the achievements of Ainie's Year (along with the accounts masterly managed by Alex and Bruce Howe) and look ahead to the remainder of our current 2017/18 Rotary year. Please come along with questions, and with suggestions for any improvements/changes that you would like to see. We will also present the Peter MacKenzie Scholarship to this year's winner Glendowie Yr 13 student Frank Leng.

We will have just one meeting in December, our Christmas Breakup Dinner and Southern India Showcase on 7th Dec. Don't miss this evening to send off the year in style, and to hear from Ainie, Gary and Miles about their HfH house-build in Bangalore and Indian travels. More details coming so you can prepare for this.

While our year's meetings conclude on 7th Dec, our activities most certainly continue with our fund-raising Christmas gift-wrap "Project Elf", 4-24 Dec. Further volunteers are needed to oversee the Glendowie College students who do the wrapping. If not already, please add your name to the roster of Elves.
Stories
Roger Goodman - Stand Out Stand In!

The advertised speaker this morning was unwell and couldn't make it.  BUT never fear, exuberant and energetic Roger was there! Members thoroughly enjoyed Roger's wonderful ad-lib narrative which gave us the low-down on his recent (and epic) teaching trip around the Pacific Islands. His Island-Hopping itinerary was so vast and so rapidly reported, the morning Editor/Scribe was simply unable to keep up. Thankfully, our resourceful Roger was happy to provide a written account, something every Editor totally appreciates!

But first, a great photo of Roger doing his very best haka pose while in the Islands.

Project Elf Update
Naughty or Nice?  Nice is winning!
Well done St John’s Rotary, rosters are filling up very “nicely”. Remember, the more Rotary Elves we have assisting, the easier and more fun the project will be. Elf-Robyn will have a hard copy of the rosters at the next meeting for anyone who would like to view and add names.

You can also add yourself (or responsible family and friends) to the Rosters electronically by using this link:

Closer to “start-up-wrap-up” (first day, December 4) Elf-Robyn will email all Elves to remind you all of the shifts you have “nicely” volunteered for.
Any further bids please?
This is a call-out for any Auction Items for the Taveuni Quiz Night fundraiser.  Both silent and live auctions are planned.  Please network for auction item ideas, vouchers, product, giveaways.  The quiz night will be held 1st March 2018 at Glen Taylor School, catering for 20-25 tables.  Any auction item donations, please contact Donald Bowie.  Email:  donald.bowie.dbc@gmail.com
