Maia flies to Paris early next month to participate in the International Womens Cup Wheelchair Rugby event. In addition to Maia's sporting talent, her personal drive and achievements in the face of severe adversity are amazing. Please be ready to give Maia a warm St Johns welcome!
You have likely received your Rotary Downunder magazine during the past week? I highlight three articles that have a special relevance, beginning with our former Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand's Guest Editorial posing the potential for better coordination and profile for Rotary in NZ if we considered rationalisation into one District and one DG for all NZ - worth some discussion? Then there's the address that Mike Webb (Rotary Foundation Trustee) gave to us at our club meeting on 7 Sept. when we hosted the Zone 7b Symposium delegates. And thirdly, the most active club in the South-West Pacific is showcased - none other than the Rotary Club of Taveuni where Geoff Amos and fellow members target projects to the value of $50,000 per member per year! Lots of great reading.
Cutting edge Laser technology was appreciated by a full contingent of 20 club members during the vocational visit last week to David Hartstone's company "Creative Awards". His business creates awards, trophies, plaques and branded products using Lasers to engrave, cut or etch and we had a thoroughly enjoyable and educational time seeing a range of high-tech laser processes in action.
Our morning started with a 'mix and mingle' in David's showroom where we enjoyed a lovely and lavish breakfast (supplied from fabulous New World Stonefields - thank you Graham Fabian) while discovering on display interesting samples of Creative Awards product range.
In support of Rotary International’s drive to eradicate polio globally our cluster, St John’s, Auckland East, Downtown Auckland and Harbourside, along with the cluster of Auckland, Newmarket, Parnell and Remuera came together to join many other clusters around the world to raise money for Polio through organising a movie night to watch the new release of Murder on the Orient Express at the Rialto.

Maia has been invited to play in an All Woman Wheel Chair Rugby tournament in Paris in December! Her current Rugby Chair won't make it. Come and hear her story and learn how you can help get her to Paris.
St John’s Rotary (in conjunction with Glendowie College Interact Club) are delighted to have the Elfortunity to supervise gift-wrapping booths at Sylvia Park. Based on last year's donations, this fundraiser could potentially raise up to $21K

I'm good. On 1st August I started my [carpentry] apprenticeship. I will finish my trial period of three months [at the end of October]. I just passed 5 weeks of my apprenticeship, from those week’s I spent 2 in the company and 3 in the school. School is really relaxing, because we are only 6 people in the class. During school weeks I just can sleep one hour longer. But I have to do the next 4 weeks work in my company. To get to my company and school I have to take every morning the train for about 20-35 min, which is different from what I am used to. Here is a photograph of me in my special apprentice uniform.
