We were so fortunate to have two special Fijian guests last meeting, including our guest speaker and new District Governor Malini Raghwan. Malini spoke about the key messages from Rotary International President Ian Riseley for this 2017-18 Rotary Year. We also heard from Geoffrey Amos, from Rotary Club of Taveuni about the extensive projects undertaken by his very active 11-member club, ahead of him hosting 5 of our members in Taveuni this week to help with construction of a school teacher's house. After the meeting, Malini met with members of the Board to encourage us in our plans for the year ahead.
Meantime, members have been active in helping at the Dove Hospice Garage Sale on Saturday, and on Sunday volunteering for planting and nursery work on Motutapu Is. - in the sunshine despite forecasts to the contrary.
This week, with interest in the upcoming election rather higher than usual, we are very fortunate to have Chloe Swarbrick speaking to us. Chloe became well known earlier through her bid for the Auckland mayoralty, and is now high on the list for the Green Party. We look forward to hearing from Chloe, and about a revamped Green Party.

It was pleasure having Malini visiting us from her home Rotary Club of Suva. Malini has grown up through Rotary in 1995 as a ROTA Pacific student at RYLA, Willow Park. Malini started off her talk with quoting Ian Riseley Rotary International President ‘Rotary Making a Difference’ and how the more involved we become, the more of a difference Rotary makes to us which Malini thought was very evident at our Club. Malini discussed Rotary International Strategic Plan and the three strategic priorities which are to support and strengthen our clubs, to focus on and increase our humanitarian service and to enhance Rotary’s public image and awareness.
It was a pleasure to welcome Geoff to our Club who is shortly hosting St John members who are travelling to Traveuni to assist in house-building. Geoff gave a big thank you to the Club for our fundraising support to Taveuni in reference to 2006 post Cyclone Winston. Geoff said the Taveuni Rotary Club made a commitment to get his community out of tents and in cyclone rated classrooms. To date there has been nine brand new teacher houses built, rebuild of the primary school and two classrooms and a substantial toilet block.
A big welcome to Gavin Gilmer who has been a frequent visitor to the Club over the past months. Gavin has been an active member in South Africa having been President and District Governor. Gavin has already observed the Club as interesting and fun so along with his expertise and great sense of humour the Club will suit him very well!
Our team arrived safely in Fiji and are already hard at work.
