The theme for the evening was Green evoked by light with a predominant wavelength of roughly 495–570 nm and representative of growth and nature. Introduced as the "Doctor of Fungus", our Incoming President, Dr Peter Buchanan, revealed an evening that was revealing, fun and very educational; Why? ... well read on ...Peter introduced guests including his family and the theme for the evening of sustainability. To that end the menu was on screen to save a whole lot of paper but there is more ... "payment" for dessert was to be four fingers in a petrie dish and in two weeks it will be revealed who has the fingers with the most bacteria on them from the fungal growth! Exciting!
On Thursday we saw 36 members who were excited to contribute to the direction of the club for this 2018 -19 Rotary year. There was certainly a buzz coming from the tables and the Directors feedback was really positive. I will look forward to sharing what the year plan looks like and the projects that will be committed to. Generating revenue is always an issue and in March 2019 we are still looking to run the Golf Day. I am meeting with Freightways in the next few weeks to see if they will continue their support for this event.
We are NOT involved in the Sylvia Park Xmas present wrap although this did produce significant funds (approx. 26k) for our Club and Interact. We will now need to look at how we seek these funds in a different way. Over the last year Rotary St Johns have put significant funds back to the community with our project support.
Each month after our Directors meeting I will be reporting back matters that may be of interest to you as a member. The Board meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month and so if you wish matters to be discussed it would be important to bring these to our attention by the previous Friday evening so that it could be included within the agenda.
Matters from the Board:
We were surprised that as a result of a review we found that only just over 50% of our members opened and read the bulletin. I know that I am preaching to the converted as you have opened this bulletin but ask all members when in discussion to encourage the engagement of “what is happening” via this great document. Peter and his helpers work hard each week to get this information to you.
Subscriptions for the 2018/19 year will not be increased and remain at $340 and payment will once again be invoiced on a quarterly basis as part of your monthly invoice. How are these funds spent?? See the pie chart below that will outline what these fees go towards.
Our banking system has had to be adjusted for this year due to the establishment of the Interact Club account and the need to manage international funds for the ONJA projects. Many thanks to Alex for working with Bruce to make this happen.
Brian is putting a lot of work into the weekly meetings with his team of helpers. This has been as a result of the feedback from the members workshop and some of these initiatives can be seen already.
For the meeting of the 2nd August we have Matt Billington presenting. This is a 19yr old who is inspiring many within our business world to make a difference so I encourage you all to be there alongside family and friends. We have also issued an invitation (15 invites) to the Board of Interact, RYPEN students, and the Tamaki College students to attend this function as our guests. Please register your attendance with Brian as soon as possible so that we can manage and cater for the numbers.
The Club meets Thursday for breakfast at 7am for 7.15am start except for the first Thursday of the month, when the Club meets in the evening at 6pm for dinner
Venue is the Remuera Golf Club, 120 Abbotts Way, Remuera, Auckland, 1072, New Zealand.
