Youth and Young Adults
Youth Service is where we work with young people to become the next generation of leaders, visionaries and peacemakers. This might range from children in primary school to young adults. Note that all projects involving direct contact with youth are also governed by established youth protection policies and procedures.
'Youth' are those aged under 18 years, Young Adults are 18 - 30 years.
- Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN) is a 4 day residential leadership course for secondary school students
- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a week-long experiential leadership course for young adults (22-28) www.ryla.co.nz
- Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) – the clubs nominates outbound secondary students for a year-long overseas education experience and also hosts a corresponding inbound from elsewhere in the world
- Trees for Survival (TFS) – sponsorship of an environmental tree growing programme with Glendowie College including a planting day annually
- Glen Taylor School Garden Project - an environmental, health and educational project
- Eureka Science and similar – we often sponsor students to educational programmes supported by Rotary.

The St Johns Rotary Club and Yachting New Zealand have broadened their relationship recently to cooperate in the ‘Have-a-Go’ project, which seeks to expose youngsters from schools in the Glendowie and Glen Innes suburbs, currently, to the challenges and thrills of yachting.
Rotarian Gary Key, one of the initiators of the scholarship, adds: “’Have-a-Go’ was introduced last year to students from St Pius School, and this year will include Glendowie College, Glen Taylor School(4 th year of participation), Stonefields School(4th year) St Pius (2 nd year), and Point England School.
A note to the supporters of Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie. Jo Aleh was a recipient of the clubs yachting scholarship a few years back and it is great to watch her continued success. See also www.teamjollyracing.com 
The club created a school garden at Glen Taylor Primary School some years ago to support the school's teaching of environmental understanding and good eating practices. The students have taken to the project with gusto over the years and the most recent planting has just taken place with a number of members joining in with the students. The club has a long-standing relationship with the school across a number of activities including supporting their school camp. The school's principal is a member of St Johns Rotary. Scott is studying at Otago University this year. He would like to express his gratitude and is keen for us to learn of his progress.Scott was given a grant for his sailing some time ago when he entered into a World Championship event. He has just competed with another boy in the Open 29er Worlds Nationals and they came 7th in the world.
